Maison Cauchie

La Maison Cauchie: Entre rêve et réalité

Edition Maison Cauchie

The Cauchie house, Paul Cauchie's personal residence, built in 1905, can be considered as one of the most beautiful works of Art Nouveau in Brussels. The uniqueness of this masterpiece confers to this work a vital charge, a force of expression which makes it significant within the framework of the Art nouveau. The artist tends to assert, to value his tastes, his culture and his position in a social context where conformism dominates. The artist tends to affirm, to value his tastes, his culture and his position in a social context where conformism dominates. To the traditional ‘intimacy' of the house, he opposes its extroversion which immediately allows him to attract attention and, consequently, to diffuse and sell his work. The originality of this house lies in the balanced synthesis between the architecture and the pictorial decoration of the façade. Paul Cauchie's merit consists in having understood that the constructive logic - Viollet-le-Duc and the myth of iron, taken up by Horta - could be contradicted by a simple pictorial solution or, at the very least, by an exclusively figurative hypothesis.
