Symposium The Public and the Modern House

Symposium 'The Public and the Modern House'
The first initiative following to the launch of the Iconic Houses Network is an all-day symposium, The Public and the Modern House, during Modernism Week, organized by the Palm Springs Art Museum and Sunnylands as a sponsor on Saturday 23 February 2013. Keynote speaker Kimberli Meyer, director of the MAK Center (Schindler House) in Los Angeles and board member of the Iconic Houses Network, will present the issues inherent to opening iconic houses to the public. Cultural tourism and architectural tourism, in particular, has grown exponentially as architecture buffs increasingly seek out historic properties. Numerous modern houses are open to the public across the globe. Directors of these modern houses have numerous challenges to keep their sites dynamic while serving various institutional goals. Growing an appreciation of the architecture and providing engaging programming, while working to preserve their historic sites, face each institution.

Following the keynote presentation, two panel discussions with representatives from American and international modern houses will discuss their innovative approaches to these issues. Participants include Natascha Drabbe, director of Mart van Schijndel Foundation / Van Schijndel House, Utrecht, Netherlands; Lynda Waggoner, director of Fallingwater, Mill Run, Pennsylvania; Iveta Cernã, director of the Villa Tugendhat, Brno, Czech Republic; Henry Urbach, director of the Glass House, New Canaan, Connecticut; Janice Lyle, director of the Sunnylands Center and Gardens, Rancho Mirage, California; Susan MacDonald, Head of Field Projects, the Getty Research Institute, Lucia Dewey Atwood, a board member and director of the 250 Year Project at the Charles and Ray Eames House Preservation Foundation, Armando Chavez, President, Luis Barragán Foundation in Mexico, Mexico City, Mexico, and Sidney Williams, Curator of Architecture and Design, Palm Springs Art Museum, Frey House II, Palm Springs, California.

Following lunch in the museum’s sculpture garden will be an afternoon tour of area homes, including Grace Miller House (Richard Neutra), Steel House (Wexler & Harrison), Loewy House (Albert Frey), and Edris House (E. Stewart Williams). A reception will be held at the final home, the Sieman Residence (William Cody).

Tickets and details are available on the Modernism Week website.
